The boys volleyball team just had their first home game and they stood their ground. They showed us what BP spirit truly is really all about. After the game, I was able to catch up with one of the players, Jaheim McGregor, and this is what he had to say.
1)What are three reasons you like being part of the volleyball team?
Being apart of the volleyball team gave me a new experience. I haven't played volleyball before so to see my progress at getting better is entertaining. The competitiveness you feel when you're in the game is very interesting to the point where it gave me even more of a reason to get better at volleyball. Also my teammates make the sport worth playing because you can't be a one man team. For instance one of our practiced we ran a scrimmage against the girls volleyball team and we thought we would inevitably lose because the girls have so much experience but we stuck to the basics and beat them because of how much we practiced and the passion we had together as a team
2)Why is it important for BP to have a male volleyball team?
Being on the boys volleyball team is very interesting because people think it's gay since girls volleyball is more popular but in reality there's nothing really feminin about the sport. On behalf of my teammates, we all enjoy the sport which is why we show up to every practice and put our all into the games. Volleyball has nothing to do with sexuality and I think that BP home game showed the school that Male's volleyball isn't "lame" or "gay". The gym was just as packed and energized as a BP basketball game. After that game people would text me and come up to me asking to join the team but it was those very same people that thought it was "gay". Even some girls would call the boys on the team "girls" for playing volleyball but I think the existence of this team proves that there's nothing feminin about volleyball.
3)How has the team built you up as an individual?
Personally I didn't want to try out for the team just because I'm lazy but I took this experience as an eye opener; I've recognized that when I step on the court I'm passionate about winning. To be around a team who are all passionate and competitive about winning builds up tenacity and grit.
4)I saw that you guys lost the first home game, how do you guys keep your head up despite the defeat?
Although we put our all into that game and lost, that doesn't give us a reason to fall. Most of my teammates were mad but I don't get flustered after an "L". You turn your loses into lessons and come back better the next time. That goes with anything in life. The practice after that game we stayed late and fixed the little things that we messed up on like our bumps and serves. We walked into our next game keeping those things in mind and won. We came back stronger and didn't let a lose get to our head.
5)On that note, how do you see the rest of the reason going?
As long as we put our all into the game and practice hard we'll be able to win our games. Volleyball isn't a very easy sport and this our first time ever playing it under the whistle so we have to practice as much as possible so we could step on the court and win our games.
